An ethical choice

Plan Vivo projects work only with rural communities and smallholders in developing countries who need support to develop sustainable agricultural and forestry systems. You can be sure that your support is contributing to sustainable development and funds are reaching the grassroots level.

Highly additional – your support will make things happen

Plan Vivo projects are highly additional; they work with communities who would otherwise lack the financial, technical and organisational capacity to implement long-term livelihood and ecosystem projects.

Years of practical experience in risk management

Plan Vivo is a framework for projects, developed and tested in pilot projects since the 1990s, based around the idea of empowering people to manage their resources. Plan Vivo aims to ensure long-term impacts through good management practices and financial incentives:

  • Community-led planning of activities, based on local needs and capabilities;
  • Staged implementation and payments based on achievement of milestones;
  • Diverse portfolio of areas and multiple species;
  • Buffer stocks of carbon maintained to cover risk of losses.

Low leakage potential

Producers are required to show that areas of forestry will not displace significant areas of crop production. Projects involve building livelihood options and diversifying income to ensure unsustainable extraction activities are reduced, not displaced.

Independent Certification and annual review

Projects are subject to annual reviews over and above third-party validation and verification to ensure continued conformance to the Plan Vivo Standard. Annual reports trigger Certificate issuance, and Certificates are tracked and retired through the independently run Markit Environmental Registry.
